Now here's something grand and innovative. Channel 4 Grand Designs presented by Kevin McCloud made it possible for us to watch and enjoy unusual architectural house-building projects. Channel 4 Grand Designs is hosted by Kevin McCloud, a designer himself, an author and with a degree in architecture and experience in theater. He's also the show's writer and he brings many innovative perspectives on Grand Designs shows. All episodes follow a format in which Kevin visits a client embarking on a project, then visiting the site and discussing the plans with them, and once the project is on progress, Kevin visits the site periodically following for any changes, hitches or delays. In each episode, Channel 4 Grand Designs show a computer visualization or CAD of the project . The project usually running on a budget, Kevin does a piece on the camera,concentrating on the unique materials and features of the project. Once the first and second fixes had commenced, Kevin again will visits and then again when it's finished or near finished and when the occupants had moved in. The episodes closes with the tour of the house and Kevin's summary of it's construction and his opinions. Some twists made the episodes more exciting such as revisiting unfinished projects where the occupants had moved in and Kevin stays with the family for a night. All featured houses has unique style and construction such as the underground houses and water towers and are rather unusual and extravagant. One of the most talked about episodes was Ben Law's woodman's cottage. It was built largely with wood harvested from surrounding woodlands, using only minimal commercial materials and predominantly free labor. Another memorable featured house is one timber framed house built in Argryll, Scotland with the stunning views of the Isle of Arran and the ecology project house of architect Richard Hawkes and his wife Sophie .Channels 4 Grand designs first episodes was aired last April 29 1999 and the latest series is due airing on early 2010. With it's overwhelming audience's response Channel 4 Grand Designs had created other spin-off shows such as Grand Designs Secret Trade, Grand Designs Indoor, Grand Designs Live, Grand Designs Live Today and Grand Designs Australia. Channel 4 Grand Designs are now broadcasting in Netherlands, Germany, Canada and South Africa. Some episodes are now available in DVD and a Grand Designs magazine is now out published by Media 10. All Channel 4 Grand Designs shows are produced by Talkback Thames, a British TV production. |
